How to apply wood treatment oil on the wood panel
An oil finish is designed to protect the wood and bring out its natural beauty. Oil is penetrating and durable, it is not only water-resistant but also gives the wood an attractive natural sheen and texture.
A hand-rubbed oil finish can be of course beautiful, but it really needs proper treatment. With tung oil or hard wax oil is the oil finish easier to apply. So now we are going to introduce you to the methods to apply wood treatment oil on the wood panel of Project Affogato Wrist Rest.
Step 1: Preparation
Find a starter kit for Project Affogato in the package.
Please work in a well-ventilated area. We strongly recommend that you wear a mask and open windows when handling wood panels, which can protect you from any dust and fumes you may encounter.
Step 2: Cleaning and Sanding
Wood panel to be finished with oil must be thoroughly sanded to even out the open pores to create a smooth surface.
First, use 1000 grit sandpaper in the starter kit to sand the wood panel. Maintain an even force during the whole sanding process and sand along the long side of the wood panel horizontally. Do not use too much force while sanding. Keep sanding until the wood panel gets smooth.
Then use 1500 grit sandpaper in the starter kit to further sand the wood panel. Maintain an even force during the whole sanding process and sand along the long side of the wood panel horizontally. Do not use too much force while sanding. Keep sanding until the wood panel gets smooth.
After sanding, clean up the dust on the panel and make sure the surface is smooth and even.
Step 3: Oil Application
Drop some hard wax oil on a dry microfiber wiper, this will allow the oil to be absorbed into the wiper without applying too much.
Rub the microfiber wiper along the grain of the wood to work in the polish. You can continue to apply more layers depending on how dry the wood panel is. Make sure to get in all crevices and corners. Continue rubbing for about 5-15 minutes, as you rub, the warmth you generate will help the oil penetrate the wood. And make sure it will not begin pooling on the wood panel, which means too much oil is applied. If you apply too much oil to the wood panel, you can use another dry microfiber wiper to absorb the excess oil.
Step 4: Drying and Recoating
Hard wax oil dry quite quickly, in most cases, it can be reapplied after 12 to 24 hours. Drying may take longer in very humid weather.
When the first coat of oil is completely dry, apply further coats until the finish is rich and hard. Normally hard wax oil sealers may require only one additional application. Rub each additional coat of oil thoroughly into the wood, as in Step 3 above, and do not forget to wipe off all excess oil. Let each coat of oil dry thoroughly before applying the next layer.
After applying all coats of oil and completely drying, the wood panel for Project Affogato is good to go!
